{"id":73,"date":"2015-04-04T21:54:07","date_gmt":"2015-04-04T21:54:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.kkatfineart.com\/?p=73"},"modified":"2015-04-04T22:02:50","modified_gmt":"2015-04-04T22:02:50","slug":"art-as-a-catalyst-for-social-change","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kkatfineart.com\/?p=73","title":{"rendered":"Art as a Catalyst for Social Change"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today, I was browsing Art News and stumbled across a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ted.com\/talks\/theaster_gates_how_to_revive_a_neighborhood_with_imagination_beauty_and_art?language=en\" target=\"_blank\">TED Talk by an artist names Theaster Gates<\/a> who is working out of the City to be a harbinger of change on the South Side of Chicago by addressing the twin problems of urban blight and the effect of cultural black holes in a depressed neighborhood. \u00a0It brought to mind other groups who have done amazing work for the good of community, such as O<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=wQwKkK1bggY\" target=\"_blank\">bject Orange in Detroit in 2006<\/a>. \u00a0It also made me wonder If I could do anything on that scale for my own community.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kkatfineart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Inform.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-82 size-medium aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kkatfineart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Inform-300x235.jpg\" alt=\"Inform\" width=\"300\" height=\"235\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.kkatfineart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Inform-300x235.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.kkatfineart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Inform-207x162.jpg 207w, https:\/\/www.kkatfineart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Inform.jpg 680w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I have always been interested in the idea of art as a catalyst for social change. \u00a0Kyle and I flirted with this in our first collaborative show, Passive-Agressive, where we sought to educate people about the information that they share so unthinkingly in their day-t0-day lives. \u00a0That whole show was built around trust, as in do you trust us enough to swipe your personal cards through the readers in our show? \u00a0Do you actually want to know what information you are sharing with the world every time you swipe your credit card somewhere?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kkatfineart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Installation1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-83 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kkatfineart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Installation1-300x201.jpg\" alt=\"What Information Do You Share?\" width=\"300\" height=\"201\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.kkatfineart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Installation1-300x201.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.kkatfineart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Installation1-207x139.jpg 207w, https:\/\/www.kkatfineart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Installation1.jpg 720w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It was amazing to talk to people about this topic from both an educational standpoint, and to see them actually think about what was going on with their information on a daily basis. \u00a0Watching people experience their information in ways they had never done before was also an incredible thing. \u00a0It was almost performance art to see them interact with the pieces.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kkatfineart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/NotAsPassiveAsYouThink.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-85 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kkatfineart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/NotAsPassiveAsYouThink-300x149.jpg\" alt=\"NotAsPassiveAsYouThink\" width=\"300\" height=\"149\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.kkatfineart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/NotAsPassiveAsYouThink-300x149.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.kkatfineart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/NotAsPassiveAsYouThink-207x103.jpg 207w, https:\/\/www.kkatfineart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/NotAsPassiveAsYouThink.jpg 720w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Afterwards, the thing that you hope so hard for when you create art happened. \u00a0People began to have a conversation about the work and what it meant to them in their lives. \u00a0Information works like a virus, it spreads because it wants to be free, and I was more than happy to help it be free to those who were open to it. \u00a0Being informed makes you more aware of how what you are doing affects both yourself and those people around you.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kkatfineart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Installation2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-84 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kkatfineart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Installation2-300x190.jpg\" alt=\"Installation2\" width=\"300\" height=\"190\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.kkatfineart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Installation2-300x190.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.kkatfineart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Installation2-207x131.jpg 207w, https:\/\/www.kkatfineart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Installation2.jpg 720w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Presently, I am rehabbing two of the pieces from this show in order to put them on display for another purpose. \u00a0I hope that the purpose I am using them for sparks just as much conversation as their initial intent did. \u00a0Interested to know what I&#8217;m using them for?
