{"id":63,"date":"2015-03-25T16:14:48","date_gmt":"2015-03-25T16:14:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.kkatfineart.com\/?p=63"},"modified":"2015-03-25T16:14:48","modified_gmt":"2015-03-25T16:14:48","slug":"i-am-a-magpie","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kkatfineart.com\/?p=63","title":{"rendered":"I am a Magpie"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>So last month I was listening to the CBC Radio show, Q, on my way home from work. \u00a0Q is an interview talk show that features artists, writers and musicians. \u00a0I listen to it because it is on when I get done with the night shift at work. \u00a0I never catch a whole episode &#8211; just the twenty or thirty minutes of it between work and home. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/radio\/q\/schedule-for-wednesday-february-18-2015-1.2970113\/explore-kim-dorland-s-sinister-you-re-going-to-die-landscapes-1.2970229\">On this particular night, they had Canadian artist Kim Dorland on<\/a> talking about his work and influences. \u00a0It is a great interview, and I highly suggest listening to it.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kkatfineart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/IMG_0286.jpg\" alt=\"How-To Sketch, I am a Magpie - china marker on black paper\" width=\"400\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When I did, I had a moment of blinding inspiration. \u00a0At 3:39 in the interview, Dorland states very clearly that he is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=Magpie&amp;espv=2&amp;biw=1680&amp;bih=811&amp;source=lnms&amp;tbm=isch&amp;sa=X&amp;ei=V90SVYSSLIHcgwTSmYGICA&amp;ved=0CAYQ_AUoAQ\">magpie<\/a> who steals beautiful things from the people he respects and admires. \u00a0I could not possibly give you a more apt description of what it is to be an artist in this day and age. \u00a0It was such a stunning statement that I had to turn the radio off and recite, &#8220;I am a magpie.&#8221; to myself over and over again. \u00a0I got home, parked the car and RAN to the studio where I wrote down these words.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kkatfineart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/IMG_0285.jpg\" alt=\"Sketch of a Sketch of a Magpie - china marker on black paper\" width=\"410\" height=\"547\" \/><\/p>\n<p>What flooded into my head was a lush green background with beautiful magpies. \u00a0Have you ever seen one?
