{"id":37,"date":"2014-05-30T01:30:13","date_gmt":"2014-05-30T01:30:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kkatfineart.wordpress.com\/?p=37"},"modified":"2014-05-30T01:30:13","modified_gmt":"2014-05-30T01:30:13","slug":"studio-space-starting-from-square-one","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kkatfineart.com\/?p=37","title":{"rendered":"Studio Space &#8211; Starting From Square One"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>So, recently I took a couple of months away from art in order to pick up and move to a different state. \u00a0Part of that involved moving my studio into a different, much smaller space. \u00a0Those of you who know me know that I am the kind of an artist who hoards a fair amount of stuff, so you can appreciate the challenge I faced. \u00a0I mean honestly, where am I going to put my five sewing machines? \u00a0What will I do with the fabric? \u00a0And that says nothing about the jewelry supplies, paints, pots of glue, bottles of ink, boxes of interesting tidbits, etc., etc.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kkatfineart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/7315624030_d9ce5c73d9_z.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-49 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kkatfineart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/7315624030_d9ce5c73d9_z.jpg?w=179\" alt=\"7315624030_d9ce5c73d9_z\" width=\"179\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I have found that having studio space helps me to make time for art in my life. \u00a0That said, I have never before had an entire room devoted to being a studio. \u00a0It always seems like I&#8217;m cordoning off a corner of the living room in order to make something. \u00a0In the last iteration of a studio I had, I had a corner of my very large living space in my three-room apartment devoted to art, a large highboy dresser, storage in the furnace room, and a large closet as well. \u00a0Whenever I was working on a larger body of work, I would modify the rest of my space in order to make it work, so the dining table became a layout space, the corner by the fridge was where I propped up pieces to finish the edges and so on. \u00a0(If you are interested,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/zoesdare\/sets\/72157638280520116\/\"> here is a photo set<\/a> of my work space changing over the years)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kkatfineart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/9243107287_8bd2c60ba7_z.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-47 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kkatfineart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/9243107287_8bd2c60ba7_z.jpg?w=225\" alt=\"9243107287_8bd2c60ba7_z\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.kkatfineart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/9243107287_8bd2c60ba7_z.jpg 480w, https:\/\/www.kkatfineart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/9243107287_8bd2c60ba7_z-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Well, suddenly, I have a three bedroom house. \u00a0This means a studio. \u00a0This also means a purge, since I&#8217;m no longer using my entire home as work-space.\u00a0 The never ending artist dilemma of what to purge!\u00a0 I wound up cutting through a fair amount of my fabrics, a few projects, and some out-dated patterns that I will probably never use.\u00a0 These were posted up online and sent out to some lucky Facebook fans.<\/p>\n<p>Then came the packing.\u00a0 Endless, endless packing.\u00a0 Followed by endless unpacking.\u00a0 I told Kyle my plan was to make it half studio\/half office in there so that he could work while I was designing jewelery or working on a piece of art, and his disbelief that we would both fit in that one room was palpable.\u00a0 Looking back on the photos, I understand.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kkatfineart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/14287466875_8c276e91d4_z.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-52 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kkatfineart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/14287466875_8c276e91d4_z.jpg?w=300\" alt=\"14287466875_8c276e91d4_z\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.kkatfineart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/14287466875_8c276e91d4_z.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.kkatfineart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/14287466875_8c276e91d4_z-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Previously, I had a highboy dresser containing most of my fabric along with some supplies such as specialty papers, yarns, etc.\u00a0 Unfortunately, that didn&#8217;t really work in the space I had.\u00a0 Just about every piece of furniture needed to have a surface I could work on, considering that the dining room table was going to be on a different floor of the house.\u00a0 And then Ikea to the rescue!\u00a0 I&#8217;m still organizing drawers, and the closet is a bit more full than I&#8217;d like.
